Pope was an English poet of the 18 th century. The Great Chain of Being was a vital part of his philosophical writing called The Essay On Man. This piece deals with the acceptance of man’s position in the Great Chain, and a review of man’s position in a finite and divinely organized universe.
As was explained in the first epistle, man is incapable of truly knowing anything about the things that are higher than he is on the “Great Chain of Being.” For this reason, the way to achieve the greatest knowledge possible is to study man, the greatest thing we have the ability to comprehend.
